Petrarch

Petrarch was an Italian poet, scholar, and early humanist whose work helped shape Renaissance literary culture. Best known for the Italian lyric sequence later called the *Canzoniere*, he also wrote extensively in Latin, gathered classical manuscripts, and developed influential methods of textual study. His writing and scholarship helped establish humanism’s emphasis on classical literature, philology, and personal interiority, while inspiring the literary tradition known as Petrarchism.
