About Motoori Norinaga

Motoori Norinaga was an Edo-period Japanese classical scholar, physician, and leading figure in the kokugaku movement. His 44-volume Kojikiden offered an influential commentary on the Kojiki, while his studies of Japanese language, classical literature, and Shinto helped shape later scholarship. He also wrote extensively on The Tale of Genji, including the influential idea of mono no aware, the pathos of things.
