Mary Church Terrell

Mary Church Terrell was an educator, suffragist, and civil-rights organizer who linked women’s voting rights with racial equality. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Oberlin College, she taught in Washington, D.C., led the National Association of Colored Women, and helped advance the early NAACP. In her later years, she challenged segregation in Washington restaurants through litigation and direct action.
