Martin Niemöller

Martin Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who became a leading figure in the Confessing Church’s opposition to Nazi interference in Protestant church life. Arrested in 1937, he spent the later Nazi years imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and Dachau. After 1945, he held senior Protestant church offices, including serving as the first president of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, and became an outspoken advocate for peace and opposition to rearmament.
