About Joseph Barrow Montefiore

Joseph Barrow Montefiore was a London-born merchant and financier who moved to New South Wales in 1829 and established the trading firm J. B. Montefiore & Co. He became a substantial landowner, helped found the Bank of Australasia, and advocated financial policies intended to encourage investment in the colony. Montefiore also played a leading role in Sydney’s early Jewish community, serving as the first president of its formally established congregation and helping secure land for a Jewish cemetery.
